Not-through-the-browser Monitoring

Postby Josh on Sat Sep 12, 2009 6:14 pm

Although I have been very busy these past two weeks, I have been constantly thinking about ways to make Quadodo rise above any other login script, user management, user monitoring, community building, client management system.

The most prominent idea that came to mind (and won't seem to go away) is a desktop and/or cell phone (think iphone/itouch) monitoring system. It would probably include something similar to the AdminCP.

How would this benefit you?
- Instant notification of new users
- Quickly check which users are online
- Edit, remove, and list users without using the browser
- Invite anyone to sign up from anywhere
- Easily change the configuration
- Get instant notifications of user subscriptions (future versions of QLS)
- Check private messages in a snap (future versions of QLS)

Obviously, because neither Doug or I can code C++/Java/Cocoa/Xcode and we have limited free time, it'd take months to complete, so please don't get your hopes up.

Also, due to the time consuming nature of such an undertaking, we'd probably have to charge for the program/app, sorry.

Please vote and express your opinions/suggestions.

Since you are looking for any kind of feedback, here's mine.

I've installed the Quadodo script only once (so far) and the owner of the company I did this work for wouldn't have any use for this feature. He likes the ability to control who can create an account, but once that happens, he doesn't care who or how many people are logged on to his website.

He knows the site is being used, because he can access their shipping and billing information and he will receive the sales orders that they create through his website.

Beyond that, he doesn't need to monitor the user activity.

So, on your voting chart, check off one for "I really don't think it's necessary."

Thanks for the forward thinking though I really don't think this would be necessary. I use a BlackBerry and have the system set up to email me when a new user registers. It isn't that big of a deal to go to the browser to ativate them. Other than that, we really don't have a need to monitor who is online or what they are doing.

If any of you are familiar with Facebook, you might know that you can enter your cell phone number to receive notifications.

Basically, Facebook might text you about a guy named John that requested you as a friend, and it will tell you to text "yes" or "no" back in order to add or ignore him.

So, Quadodo could function the same way with new account requests or status updates, only using email instead of text messaging.

Example:
Code: Select all
TheDude is waiting for account activation. Reply "yes" to activate or "no" to remove request. If you are unsure, reply "info" to get more information about TheDude.

--Quadodo

The only part I haven't figured out is how Quadodo would detect the response since there's no "from" email.

Just something to think about I suppose.
